Louis Leo “Lou” Holtz was born January 6, 1937 in Follansbee, West Virginia. He is a retired football coach (34 years as a head coach-9 years as an assistant coach) and television analyst.
He is known not only for his success as a winning college coach, but also for his philosophy of life and of football, along with his quick wit and sense of humor. He is a graduate of Kent State University (where he played on the football team as an undersized linebacker) and also was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Notre Dame
His head coaching record in college was 249-132-7. Included in that total was a record of 12-8-2 in Bowl Games. He had track record reputation for inherting programs that were struggling and quickly returning them to prominence, national rankings, and bowl appearances.
Twenty-five of Holtz’ Assistant Coaches have gone on to become Head Coaches at either the college or the professional level. Among the more well known coaches who served as an assistant for Holtz before moving on to become head coaches are: Monte Kiffin, Barry Alvarez, Houston Nutt, Pete Carroll, Rick Minter, Skip Holtz, Bob Davie, Urban Meyer, Rick Stockstill, and Charlie Strong.
His 1988 Notre Dame team went 12–0 and was the consensus national champion. Among his other coaching accomplishments are: an election to the College Football Hall of Fame, being the only head coach to take six schools to bowl games, and being the only college coach to have 4 different schools ranked in the end of season top 20, National Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year (presented by the American Heart Association) in both 1977 and 1988, Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year (presented by the Football Writers Association of America) in 1977 and 1988, Sporting News College Football Coach of the Year in 1977 & 1988, and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year 1977.
In addition to his record as a football coach, Holtz is a successful author and was a sought after inspirational speaker.
