Biographical Sketch

Maya Angelou, original name Marguerite Annie Johnson, (born April 4, 1928, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.—May 28, 2014) American award-winning poet, memoirist, civil rights activist, and Grammy-winning composer, director, and actress.

She is best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman. It has been translated into numerous languages and has sold over a million copies worldwide. Angelou eventually published six more autobiographies, culminating in 2013’s Mom & Me & Mom.

With more than 30 bestselling titles, Maya Angelou has written 36 books.

Maya Angelou was heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s. In 1964, Angelou returned to the United States to work with the Organization of African American Unity, led by Malcolm X. When the organization collapsed after Malcolm X’s assassination, Angelou began working with Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote the Southern Christian Leadership Conference through her role as Northern Coordinator.

A Song Flung up to Heaven, published in 2002, is the sixth installment of her autobiographical series, and provides a personal account of Angelou’s role as an influential leader of the civil rights movement between 1965 and 1968.

She wrote many poetry volumes, such as the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Just Give me a Drink of Water ‘fore I Diiie (1971), as well as several essay collections. Angelou carried out a wide variety of activities on stage and screen as a writer, actor, director, and producer.

In 1972, she became the first African American woman to have her screenplay turned into a film with the production of Georgia, Georgia.

In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
