Responsibility can be viewed as a burden or as a means to improve our lives. One can look at a responsibility such as having to work as a necessary evil to earn an icome, or as a way to have a positive impact on others and earn the means to providing for the needs of your family.
To be able to fufill your exteranl responsibilites to your family, your employer, your community, and the world as a whole, you must first develop personal responsibility. Here are a few characteristics that exemplify someone with a well developed sense of personal responsibility:
They personify civility and believe that disputes with others should be settled amicably and respectfully.
Self-control over their impulses, feelings, and desires.
A strong locus of control. Locus of control is the extent to which a person feels they have the ability to direct their own life. People with a poor feeling of control see difficulties as defining their lives rather than as chances to grow stronger, wiser, and more resilient.
They are honest with others as well as with themselves. That includes assuming accountability when they have made a mistake or done something wrong.
They don’t engage in immoral behavior. At times that may mean questioning and or defying authority when they are directed to do something that is morally wrong.
Eveyone’s view of both personal responsibility and responsibility to others are influenced by others, but ultimately end up being defined internally. We are able to make our own decisions as to what we should and should not be responsible for, however, we are not free to decide what the consequences will be for our decisions.
We can choose to fulfill or not to fulfill our societial. However, if we don’t meet responsibilites such as doing our job to the best of our abilities, not paying our bills, or not obeying traffic laws, we cannot chose the consequences–we must suffer them.
