Self care is not overindulging ones self with unnecessary pampering.
Self care means taking care of youself so that you are physcially, mentally, and emotionally healthy. Not taking care of yourself leads to poor health and wellness and increased stress. Those factors not only decrease the quality of your life, but they hurt your ability to meet professional expecations, and not being able to be there for your family and friends as well and as much as you want.
Taking into account the following facts from Healthline.com, it shows why it is even more important for teachers and administrators to practice self-care:
Job-related stress among eductors occures at twice the rate that it occurs in the general population of working adults.
Well-being is very low among educators of color, mid-career teachers, and females in the profession. For educators of color, discrimination is a major cause of stress and decreased well-being. As for reasons for well-being issues among mid-career and female teachers, many of those individuals are dealing with both their career and starting/raising families.
Poor well-being among educators affects both students and other educators that they work with.
Teachers and school administrators are more likely than those in other professions to experience symptoms of depression.
A few of the more prominent causes of teacher stress are:
Redirecting negative student behaviors.
Increased administrative and non teaching related responsibilities.
Supporting students’ mental health and well-being.
Embrace the stress. If you approach your stress in a positive way, your body will react to it differently and you’ll avoid long-term physical damage.
When you’re under a lot of stress, take a deep breath in for four seconds (place your hands on your tummy and feel it extend out), followed by a smooth four seconds of exhalation. For best results, keep doing this for two to three minutes.
Let go of perfectionism and allow yourself to be imperfect.
There will always be problems and they can’t all be solved at once. I learned in my education graduate courses that if there is a classroom that doesn’t have problems, then that is a problem. Learning is about making mistakes, exploring, and uncertainty. Embrace that.
Develop connections with your coworkers, neighbors, and friends as well. According to Kelly McGonigal‘s research, the majority of significant stressful life experiences are substantially associated with poor health outcomes, with the exception of those who reported providing care for others, who did not suffer any such consequences.
